Parent Council Meeting Moved to Oct 1

Hi Everyone,

Please note that the Gledhill Parent Council meeting & elections have been moved to Tuesday, Oct 1.

Please consider getting involved in whatever way you can! Check out the original blog post for details: https://gledhillguardian.com/2024/09/10/welcome-back-gledhill-families/

See you then!

Here’s what you need to know for the Terry Fox Run on Sep 26.

This was shared in last week’s bulletin, but sharing to make it easy to find!

In preparation for the walk, please take note of the following details…

  1. We are hoping to hit our goal of $8,730 as this would bring Gledhill’s fundraising total to $100,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation over the past 23 years that we have been supporting the Terry Fox Foundation.
  1. The day of our school walk will be THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26th after morning recess. All fundraising will be done exclusively through the www.terryfoxschoolrun.org website. Click on “menu”, then “Find a school” and enter “Gledhill Junior Public School”.  Make sure to include the name(s) of the student(s) you are supporting as we will be conducting a t-shirt draw on the day of our school walk. Students who participated in the online donations will be automatically entered in the draw.

(Please do not send any cash or cheques to the school.)

Please submit all online donations no later than the end of day,  Friday, October 1st.

  1. We are organizing our 4th “Terry Staff Challenge” event where we will invite staff to volunteer to do something fun, based on the funds raised… Will we see staff in silly costumes? Will they be wrapped up like a mummy? Will staff get taped to a wall?

October date to be announced.

  1. If you would like to purchase a bilingual T-shirt, the adult shirt is $25, and youth size is $20. In order for you to receive the shirts prior to our school run, please click on the link order under the “shop” section of the “menu”, as soon as possible. https://shop.terryfox.org/products/2023-terry-fox-run-t-shirt [UPDATE: Looking at the website, they seem to be sold out, but keep checking back incase they restock]

Thank you in advance for your support!!!

Any addition updates can be found here from Ms. Bailey!

Sincerely,

The Terry Fox Committee

Welcome Back, Gledhill Families!

We hope that the first week of school has been a smooth transition for everyone in your homes!

On Tuesday, October 1st, at 6:30 p.m.[Updated as of Sep 17] , Gledhill’s Parent Council will host their elections for the 2024/2025 positions. The Council is experiencing natural turnover from parents who have been engaged for some time or who have aged out of the school. The following positions must be filled for the Council to continue. To submit your nomination, please click here.

Chair / Co-Chair – provides leadership and guidance to the Council, liaises with the Principal and Vice Principal on School Council related matters, and represents the Council at external Toronto District School Board (TDSB) meetings, as required.

Secretary – provides organizational oversight for the Council, including attending and taking minutes at each School Council meeting, preparing these minutes for draft review, and assisting in the creation and sharing of meeting agendas. The Secretary also ensures that agendas and minutes are shared on the School Council website.

Treasurer – responsible for maintaining the School Council financial records including issuing cheques, making bank deposits, preparing financial statements (including annual statements to the TDSB), and bank account reconciliations. The Treasurer is a signatory on the bank account. Past experience with financial records and budgeting would be an asset.

In addition, there are plenty of other committees that traditionally exist on a parent council that will need support. Please click here to read what those are and what they entail.

The meeting on Thursday, September 19th at 6:30 p.m. will be a hybrid meeting, hopefully allowing more people to feel connected with the school and the ability to put their name forward.

If you are interested in a position (executive or otherwise), please click here to fill out the application form. Everything will be kept confidential and the vote will happen live on Thursday, September 19th at 6:30 p.m. To be considered for a role on the 19th, we ask that you do fill out the nomination form.

If you have any questions in getting involved, please reach out to the Gledhill Guardian email at thegledhillguardian@gmail.com. The Zoom link and meeting location details will be shared closer to the time.

Thank you!

Welcome Back!

We hope you had a fantastic summer and are returning with excitement and energy for a new school year 2024-2025!

All students will enter from the rear of our building, with the exception of students who are bussed to our school. Those students will enter from the front doors.

Kindergarten students will be received in either the Kindergarten Playscape (near Gledhill Avenue) or the Kindergarten Quad area (back of the school). Look for your teacher to acknowledge your arrival and please drop off your child in the designated area. At that point, we are encouraging parents to say their goodbyes and depart in order to allow for all the children to enter the play space. They will be staying outside to play in the mornings and prior to pick-up. This provides a soft-start to the day before they line up and move inside at a later time.

Our Gr 1-5 students will line up at their designated spots on the pavement. They are marked with a room #. Their teachers will be there to receive them.

Entry time is 8:45am, Dismissal is at 3:20.

Wishing everyone a smooth first day back!

2023-2024 Fundraising Wrap-Up!

The Parent Council would like to send out a big thank you to our Gledhill community for coming together to support Gledhill through a variety of fundraising initiatives this year, most recently our Family Fest and Silent Auction! We also had 9 pizza lunches, an incredible parent Halloween party and a Marlies game to support the school!

What are we supporting, you ask?! Good question!

Parent Council found itself in the privileged position of being able to support the school with over $30,000 this year. With these funds, the school will be purchasing:

  • A FULL class set (30) of new Chrome books ($7,700)
  • A ChromeBook charging station ($1,500)
  • English and French Literacy Materials ($1,500)
  • Drama with Jeff for the 2024/2025 School Year ($4,000)
  • Chess Program for the 2024/2025 School Year ($6,000)
  • School Buses for Field Trips 2023/2024 – each teacher was provided with $250 to put towards a field trip with their class ($6,250)
  • Classroom Support for Teachers 2023/2024 – each teacher was provided with $150 to purchase items for their classroom. Some used this for art supplies, new equipment, new books and much more! ($3,750)

Without the support of our school community, these things would not be happening. Please continue to support council initiatives in the future so that we can continue to create these opportunities for Gledhill’s students!

Please keep reading to see how we raised these funds!

We hosted 9 pizza lunches! That is 9 lunches that you didn’t have to make this year which is a win in itself, not to mention the money it helps raise for Gledhill. Thank you to Jennifer Otley and Janelle Petkopoulos for continuing to lead this initiative! And the countless parents who volunteered their time as well. You have it down to a science!

In October 2023, Parent Council hosted a parent Halloween party, costume contest and all, to raise funds. Thank you to the Don on Danforth for hosting us that evening. A big congratulations to all of the incredible costumes that came out that night – the Game Boy, the Queen of Hearts, Wayne & Garth, Where’s Waldo, Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce, Yellowstone’s Rip and Beth, 90210’s Brenda and Kelly, Ted Lasso and many, many, MANY more.

Council had another day out at the Marlies on March 24th. We had over 100 community members join us this year!

We hosted TWO incredible movie nights! Our kids love these evenings so much. A huge thank you to Maggie Crilly for leading these this year and post-Covid. There are so many moving pieces to these evenings that seem effortless with Maggie at the helm. We are going to miss you next year when you’re a full on DA parent!

Our biggest event is always Family Fest and 2024 was no different, except the incredible results we saw from the event!

This year’s Family Fest raised an outstanding $11,387. Jessica Braun has pulled a team together since Spring 2022 to ensure this amazing event happens for our kids and families. Thank you, Jessica and team! Parent Council is grateful to the support of those who gave up an hour or two (or more for some!) on May 30th! Please keep this in mind next year. Without volunteers, this event does not happen.

$4,400 of these proceeds came from our first Family Fest Silent Auction. A HUGE thank you to Erin Kuri, Marci Rodriguez, Jonathan Parham, Tara Narbonne and Meg Davies for making this possible. We want to send out a big thank you to all of our community donors who provided services and products, the teachers and parents who put together exciting classroom baskets, those teachers who shared their time to put on fun lunch time events, the volunteers who helped to organize and coordinate the auction behind the scenes, and to all who participated in the bidding of so many amazing prizes.

In an effort to collect feedback to support this fundraising initiative in future years, please complete this brief survey. Thank you in advance!
