The Gledhill Avenue Child Care Centre needs community board members

The Gledhill Junior Public School shares our building with the Gledhill Avenue Child Care Centre.

The centre, founded in 1989, provides preschool care as well as before and after school care for children from kindergarten to grade 5. There are approximately 100 children in care at the centre.

As a not-for-profit daycare it is overseen by a board of directors (BOD). This is where you come in. We need outside expertise and enthusiasm to keep this institution running smoothly.

It is a rewarding experience to know you are ensuring the continuation of this vital resource for the community’s parents.

On Tuesday October 25th 2022 we will hold our annual AGM and determine the members of our next Board of Directors.

What is involved in being on this BOD?

  • The board is looking for some new Directors starting in October 2022. We can have up to twelve so there’s plenty of room for you. That said, several of our Directors will be continuing. You won’t be starting from scratch or going it alone.
  • The board meets roughly once a month – mostly by video conference.
  • Being a Director is a time commitment of about 1-2 hours a month – 1 hour for the meeting plus a bit of work towards the initiatives and committees of the board.
  • Community members of all backgrounds and skill sets are welcome. Backgrounds that are especially useful are:
    • Communications
    • Policy making
    • Accounting or bookkeeping
    • Law and governance
    • Previous experience on a not for profit board

A background in these areas would be a big help, but the most important thing is an interest in making the best centre possible for the families of our community.

Interested?

If you’re Interested in getting involved in the Gledhill Avenue Child Care Centre board of directors there’s a few ways you can let us know:

  • pop by the office on the first floor of the school by door 7 and let Ashley or Tash know of your interest
  • email us at director@gledhillchildcare.ca

Morning Announcement (For Students):

This is just a reminder that the cross country runners in Grades 4 and 5 are to meet me at Door 5 (Gym) when the morning bell rings at 8:40. The runners in Grades 2 and 3 are to go to class for attendance first. I will start picking you up at around 9:00. Consider bringing books to read, sketch books, decks of playing cards, etc. to keep busy during off-race times. Please do NOT bring sporting equipment. See you tomorrow!

🏃‍♂️ Cross Country Update 🏃‍♀️

A message to parents from Ms. Smith regarding cross country:

Parents of our cross country runners are more than welcome to come to the meets to support their children! In the interest of safety and monitoring attendance, I would like the primary (Grades 2-3) and the junior (Grades 4-5) teams to travel to Sunnybrook Park together. If you would like to take your own child home after the race, please just let me know first so that I can document it. Finally, Sunnybrook Park is located at 1132 Leslie Street (Leslie and Eglinton). Thanks in advance! Ms. Smith

Also, in case you missed the letter that was sent home yesterday (Oct 5th) below are some details:

As a reminder, the South Conference Qualifying Cross Country Meet for Gledhill Jr. P.S. will take place next Wednesday, October 12th. A school bus has been booked and will be leaving Gledhill at 9:45 a.m. It will be departing Sunnybrook Park to come back to school at 1:00 p.m. sharp. We have a very large team this year and the bus only has a capacity of 47 people. Thus, due to numbers, runners in Grades 2 and 3 will ride the school bus to the meet with myself, Mr. Webb, and one parent volunteer. Mr. Pearson and some other parent volunteers will travel with the Grade 4 and 5 students on the TTC, leaving at approximately 9:30 a.m. Mr. Pearson and I will switch roles for the rides back to school. I would like the Grade 4 and 5 students to meet me outside Door 5 when the bell rings at 8:45 on race day, so that we can go into the gym and hand out the jerseys. I will pick up the students in Grades 2 and 3 from their classrooms after they check in for attendance to do the same.

Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather, as the races will go on rain or shine, except in the case of thunderstorms. Also, please pack some water and lunch/snacks for him/her/them.
