“I would like to acknowledge that this school is situated upon traditional territories. The territories include the Wendat, Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Mississaugas of Scugog, Hiawatha, Alderville First Nation and the Métis Nation. The treaty that was signed for this particular parcel of land is collectively referred to as the Williams Treaties of 1923 and applies to lands east of Woodbine Avenue. I also recognize the enduring presence of Aboriginal peoples on this land.”

2. Teachers, please have students empty your paper recycling bins in the basement sometime today.  Please remind students to make sure there is room in the bin before they dump it.
3. Today is International Women’s and United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace(United Nations)- “The celebration of March 8th as International Women’s Day(IWD) recognizes the struggles of women against all forms of discrimination and exploitation and focuses on the need for global equality, democracy and peace.  On International Women’s Day, women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, economic, and political differences join in the commemoration of this significant event.  On March 8th 1908, women needle trade-workers in New York reacting against their brutal exploitation held a women’s day demonstration.  These women fought for the right to unionize and demanded the right to vote.  The success of the rally led to similar rallies in other US cities and in other countries. Why is international women’s day important to recognize in Canada? In 2005 women earned just 70.5% as men, and 70% of minimum wage earners are women.  More than half are immigrant racial women.  Two million adult Canadian workers earn less than 10 dollars an hour of which two thirds are women (according to Statistics Canada 2007).

1. Read Aloud Club and Forest of Reading Club meet today at 1145 in the library.  Students, eat your lunch and wait to be picked up at 1145.  Make sure you bring all of your outdoor gear with you.  You will be going outside.

• Reminder that all skaters (students, teachers and parents) need CSA approved helmets.
• Students who need to, will be able to borrow skates and helmets at the arena.
• If you are able to volunteer with your child’s class, please notify your child’s teacher directly. Thank you to all our parent volunteers!
