Last Night’s Council Meeting Highlights and Minutes

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend last night’s council meeting.

For full meeting minutes from last night click HERE

Some highlights and time sensitive discussions included:

  1. Michelle Aarts from PIAC (Parent Involvement Advisory Committee) discussed all the resources they have to offer parents and school councils. Their website is www.torontopiac.com. She discussed important opportunities coming up within the TDSB for parents to learn and provide input:
  • TDSB Parents As Partners Conference Next Weekend (April 28): Community Advisory groups (French, Mental Health and Well being), registration for daycare is closed but you can still go. It’s a free conference for parents, has great resources, navigating special education, what to expect in high school, cultural differences – Location: Beanfield Center in Exhibition Place
  • French programs are being reviewed board wide – Throughout May, there are public forums being held at local schools for parent and teacher input. For dates and locations check out the TDSB site HERE

2. Breakfast Club: Several  volunteers have left and we are losing more people come fall. Some days may have to be cancelled because there is not enough adult supervision – team of current volunteers are meeting to determine the go forward plan. If the program needs to reduce to 4 or less days, parents will be advised in advance.

Reminder, Police checks are required to participate and this takes 3 months, if you have time to help even for an hour – please drop by and coordinate with the team or email jenniferscaife@royallepage.ca

3.  The school will be shut for the summer for construction. This will impact Terry Fox CC & Daycare.

4.  Phil Pothen – a parent from Secord PS came to seek Gledhill parent support on a couple of concerning issues:

  • May 15 – Barbara Gray head of Transportation is meeting with parents to think about Safe walking to school – pedestrian access – should there be additional crosswalks, parking signs etc.
    • Gledhill parents are encouraged to think about if your children’s walk to school could use improvements i.e. crossing Danforth, car dealership, buses not being able to park in front of school because of cars parked/congestion
  • Secord is over capacity (has 14 portables) and is concerned with new condos being constructed on the Danforth – there has not been funds directed to expand schools to accommodate
    • Secord is looking for parent engagement and there is a petition to call for community investment and collection of education enhancement charges – oriented towards Secord but Gledhill will be impacted downstream
    • More information will be posted about this on the blog when it becomes available

5. The council is doing a review of the Gledhill School Council Bi-Laws (see Blog https://gledhillguardian.com/council/regulations for details)

  • There will be a minor change for clarification that teachers are not voting members
  • Next meeting we will vote on this change (requirement) so if anyone else has changes they’d like to recommend, please bring them forward at the next meeting or email us at thegledhillguardian@gmail.com

Upcoming dates

  • EQAO Info Night at Earl Beatty – 6-7pm April 26th

Spotlight On: Scientists in School

Did you know that your child gets to participate in an extra-curricular science program in their class every year?

Every class at Gledhill gets to experience a half-day session with a scientist from the Scientists in School program (http://www.scientistsinschool.ca/) and have hands on interaction with material that is relevant for their specific grade.

For example, some classes might learn about animals and get to touch and feel different animal skins and artifacts and some might learn about volume and weight and use different equipment to test out their predictions and learn about the concepts.

The purpose of the program is to engage students in real-world experiences that spark curiosity and nurture their inquisitive minds to help them discover the fascinating and fun side of science, technology, engineering, math (STEM), and the environment.

Each year the session your child participates in will be a little different so they will get many unique scientist experiences while they are at Gledhill.  It is a favourite and memorable event for students.

AND, parents get to join in the fun!

If you are able, teachers usually ask for 4-5 parent volunteers to assist in your child’s class during the scheduled time. Volunteers get to help at one of the hands-on stations and work with students in smaller groups. There are clear instructions at each station as well as help from the scientist leading the session which helps make the learning and instructing easy and fun. You also get a glimpse into the life of your child and what their classroom and classmates are like – it is a nice way to spend half a day.

The teachers at Gledhill are also very supportive and appreciative of the program as it is a great supplement to their teaching and it encourages students to use hands on material that may not otherwise be available.

This is what one of our amazing teachers at Gledhill, M. Leclerc, said about the program:

Scientists In Schools always enriches our science programs at Gledhill. Their programs can be a great way to launch or wrap up the key ideas of a science unit. The scientists (instructors) are able to conduct their workshops many times over months or years, so they know how to maximize their half-day visit so that our students learn a ton.

This year my class was extremely engaged, using appealing and age appropriate science equipment at each station to explore pulleys and gears and build on their own understanding of concepts as they moved through activities. The kids are also very excited when their own parents can come and volunteer for this workshop. Thanks Parent Council, it’s not always easy to round up the gear for a class to explore a topic in such depth!

The School Council, with the help from all parents at Gledhill, are happy to fund this program each year with money we earn from our fundraising efforts (the total cost is approximately $3,000 each year).

Thank you to the Gledhill staff and administration for supporting this important and well-liked program and thank you to parents and guardians for making this program possible.

Council Meeting Tonight – Guest Speaker from PIAC discussing TDSB “How Tos”

Council Meeting is TONIGHT in the Gledhill School Library at 6:00pm with guest speaker Michelle Aarts from PIAC discussing a bunch of “How tos” within the TDSB:

1. How to navigate resources for your child and connect with parents who have similar experiences.

2. How to have a voice in the TDSB including where to find information about TDSB public forums and feedback opportunities and how to be involved in education initiatives and advisory committees.

3. “How to” resources for school council – from running events to increasing parent engagement to running the administrative side of a council.

Childcare and pizza will be provided

PIAC (Parent Involvement Advisory Committee) is an official (legislated) TDSB advisory committee that supports student success through parent engagement. They make recommendations to the TDSB regarding their engagement and communication with the parent community and school councils. PIAC members are parent volunteers and accomplish most of their goals through ‘working groups’ and the outreach of individual members in their TDSB Wards.
