  1. Two messages from the Eco-Club: Hi! Eco Club members are concerned about the impact of garbage on animals and plants. As you already know, 2 weeks ago we conducted a waste audit in the Lunch Room. We noticed a significant number of metallic wrappers being used by our students. As you know, metallic wrappers are man made items. They are not recyclable. They are litter and it takes about 80 years for them to decompose in our land fills. This is an extremely long time considering how quickly their content was consumed! So, think of alternative choices such as baking with your parents and packing your baked goods in reusable containers. Have fun baking with your parents!
  2. Also, Gledhill, did you know there is a Great Canadian Backyard Bird Count going on this week? Citizens like you and me can keep track of the types of birds we see and how many and report it to the Audubon Society. It’s called citizen science when we volunteer some of our time to share our observations. Find out more HERE
  3. Junior Choir is today – Students, Mrs Bailey will pick up from lunchrooms at 11:45.

Healthy Kids Committee’s Recipe of the Month – Tostadas!

Mexican tostadas make a weekly appearance on our table. They are delicious, healthy AND fun because you can build your own. Perfect for family and fun with guests! Also, this is a good way to include more raw vegetables into your diet.
I’m sure you’ve had a taco night or two, but tostadas are a new twist to the party. And they are more messy, yay! You can find these “flat taco shells” in your grocery store in the Mexican food section, I get mine at Metro.
If you’re going to keep this a vegetarian dish, use a can of refried beans as your protein, or make your own. Here’s an easy way to make them: Just drain and rinse a can of black beans, put them in a saucepan on the stove with a bit of water, salt and chili powder (to taste), heat and mash ’em up with a potato masher. Presto!
Now for toppings. Here are some ideas, you can use as few or many as you like:
– Cabbage (healthier than lettuce! Tip: shred on a mandolin)
– Salsa
– Onions (green are best)
– Bell peppers
– Cheese (cheddar is good but I love feta, or queso fresco if you can get)
– Cilantro (does it taste like soap, or do you love it?)
– Sour cream
– Black olives
– Tomatoes
– Avocados (or guacamole, mmmmm)
– Jalapeños
– Hot sauce
– Fresh lemon or lime wedges to squeeze on top

  1. Our grade 6 co-ed ball hockey team played their quarter final match this week against Cosburn. They fought hard but came up just short. Making the top 8 in all the south is a big achievement. It has been an amazing year. (Mr Webb)
  2. Congratulations to J in Rm 26, A in Rm 19, A in Rm 20 and A in Rm 26 who knew several song titles that had the word LOVE in it. Please see Mrs. Bailey for your prize. There were so many great entries! Thank you!
  3. A huge thank you from Hailey for all the pink and red hearts full of thoughtful messages and the generous gifts! She is grateful and sends her thanks.

Spotlight On: Skate Day!

What is Skate Day?

Each year Gledhill’s School Council books a local arena for the day and gathers some extra skates and helmets so that all kids, grades 1-6, can have a fun time skating with their classmates, teachers and parents.

This year’s Skate Day is Thursday, March 8th at Ted Reeve Arena. Students walk to the arena with their teacher and a few parent helpers per class. They are encouraged to bring their own skates and helmets, but there is a change room that the council  stocks with extras to borrow so that all kids can participate. Typically, the Primary classes (Grades 1, 2 and 3) skate in the morning and Junior (Grades 4, 5 and 6) skate in the afternoon but teachers will communicate exact skate times with parents via permission forms sent home.

Skate Day is an amazing day full of smiles with some kids skating for the first time and other more experienced skaters helping their friends stay up!

How to get involved:

  1. Be a helper for your child’s class (2-3 parents per class) – Parents are needed to walk to and from the arena with the classes and help tie all those skates. Parent helpers are welcome to skate too, but it is not at all required. If you are able to help in this way, indicate so on the permission form to communicate this directly to your child’s classroom teacher.
  2. Be part of the set up and take down crew (4-5 parents) – The skates and helmets we bring for the kids to borrow need to be transported to Ted Reeve in the morning, set up and then returned to the school at the end of the day. If you are able to help with either Set Up – 8:30 am- 9:30am and Take Down 2:30pm-3:30pm please email thegledhillguardian@gmail.com
  3. Be a Skate Day organizer! Do you have a child in Grades 1 or 2 and you’d like to help with a once a year event like Skate Day? Our Skate Day organizer will be leaving the school after next year and needs someone to shadow her and learn the ropes to take it over after she leaves. It’s a very easy, rewarding way to get involved!   1. What a great few days we’ve had seeing so many students supporting our Hearts for Hailey fundraiser. This morning at recess outside the music room is your last chance to buy hearts. MAKE SURE ALL DECORATED HEARTS ARE IN THE MAILBOX TOMORROW! It is located outside the office.
  2. Junior Choir practices begin tomorrow. Attendance, as usual, is mandatory.
  3. A reminder that all gym classes are in the small lunchroom today.
  4. Today after school outside the office, glow sticks for Thursday’s “Light Up the Night for Hailey” will be on sale 1 for $2 or 3 for $5.

  2. Best of luck to our co-ed ball hockey team from Grades 4 & 5. They are off to Chester to play in their tournament today. Go Tigers!
  3. Staff, this is a reminder of the graduation meeting today at lunch in room 30. See you there!
  4. Congratulations to the boys basketball team who played their best yesterday. We had a lot of fun and learned together.
  5. This is a friendly reminder for the Eco Club kids who are invited to our waste audit to remember to meet today at the beginning of lunch in room 6. See you there!
  6. Mrs. Pace needs to see the grade 6 ball hockey team at morning recess to hand out permission forms for Monday’s game at Cosburn.

  8. Today is the Opening Ceremony for the 2018 Winter Olympics. Tell Mrs. Pace or Mr. Webb where the Games are taking place.
