“Screenagers” at DA Morrison Tonight at 6:30pm

Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well.

In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can
empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.

Parents and students are welcome. (May not be suitable for younger children due to graphic video game clips). Popcorn and refreshments will be available.

TDSB French Program Review – Online Parent Survey

The TDSB is reviewing French programs and wants parent input. In addition to the forums being held at local schools (discussed in the previous post). They also now have an online survey for parents to give feedback on their experience with French Programs (Immersion/Core/Extended).

The survey can be found on the TDSB site HERE

TDSB wants Parent Input on French Programs – May 15 at Birchmount Park CI

French programs are being reviewed board wide and the TDSB is looking for parent and teacher input – Throughout May, there are public forums being held at local schools. For dates, locations and an online survey check out the TDSB site HERE

The closest, upcoming forum is on Tuesday, May 15th from 7-9pm at Birchmount Park CI located at 3663 Danforth Ave.

More detail from the TDSB site:

“With over 90,000 students in Core French and another 28,000 students in French Immersion/Extended French programs come system successes and challenges. We are proud of the Board’s successes in retention rate, inclusion of students with special education needs as well as accessibility and transportation. At the same time, challenges include multiple entry points, equity of access, and transportation.

As part of the Director’s Response to the Enhanced Equity Task Force Report, a review of all French Programs will begin in Spring 2018. In collaboration with the TDSB Research Department, this review will focus on the current status of all French Programs, including the structure, content of the teaching and learning, and policies and procedures related to French. We look forward to receiving feedback about the successes and challenges of the various French Programs through face-to-face consultation with parents/guardians, Trustees, staff, students and community members and an online survey.”

Time to Boogie! – Gledhill’s Annual Dance-a-thon is Next Friday, May 11th

It’s time for Gledhill students to put on their dancing shoes. The one and only Gledhill Dance-a-thon is coming soon. On Friday, May 11th all students, JK through Grade 6, will join their classmates and head down to the gym at a scheduled time during the school day and discover that it has been transformed! They will dance their heart out to raise money for our school. Amazing music will once again be brought to you by DJ Rhino.

The Dance-a-thon is one of our School Council’s key fundraisers for the year. All money raised will be used to fund enrichment programs at Gledhill such as: Drama with Jeff, Scientists in the School and Skate Day.

We are hoping that all who can, will help us raise an average of $25 per student through pledges from family and friends. All students will have the opportunity to participate in the Dance-a-thon regardless of the amount they raise.

Donations can be collected two ways:

  1. QUICK & EASY METHOD – Online at www.sagoto.com/gsc/dance
  2. Using a Pledge Form (showing up soon in a backpack near you – or print one HERE) and then return it with all cash and cheques to the classroom teacher by Friday, May 11th.

Feel free to share the online donation link with family and friends so they can sponsor your child easily!

*As per TDSB policy, tax receipts will be issued for individual donations of $25 or more (cash, cheque or online donation).

If you have any questions regarding Dance-a-thon or you would like to volunteer, please contact thegledhillguardian@gmail.com.

Healthy, Litter-less Lunches at Gledhill

Gledhill’s Eco-Club and the Healthy Kids Committee are on a mission to remind kids about healthy & sugar free lunches and to promote litter-less lunches.
Eco-club made visits to the lunch-room to find out which students had a litter-less lunch. Their names were entered in a draw for some fun prizes. Four students won a prize out of a very high number of participants!
What exactly were we looking for? Well here’s what:

1. Reusable drink containers with water to drink (no juice or pop)

2. Reusable food containers. No garbage. (Easy to open and BPA free Tupperware are available at the Dollarama)

3. Sugar free lunch and snack.

Let’s work together to keep the trash out of our schoolyard, keep our bodies healthy and strong, and love our planet!

Gledhill’s Eco-Club runs every Thursday at lunch. Our Walking Wednesday campaign starts soon to promote healthy and sustainable transportation. We will also begin planning our vegetable and pollinator gardens this month.

Congratulations to the Winners of the Pink Day Raffle!

A note from Mme Bey:
Congratulations to students “V” in Room 10 and “D” in Room 28.  They are the winners of the Pink Day Gift Baskets raffled off last week.  Thanks to all for participating!  We raised over $250.00 for the Day of Pink Foundation.
